Lester first joined Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service in 1998 as an on-call firefighter in Pontardulais.
Prior to joining the Fire Service, I had various jobs but worked mainly in retail and fishery management. I was privileged to serve my community in Pontardulais as an On-call Firefighter for 17 years. In 2007 I joined the Community Risk Reduction Department, within MAWWFRS, as a Youth Worker in the newly formed Service Youth Team where I continue to work today.
My role is to assist with the running of all youth activities that the Service run, but I am mainly involved with the delivery of the Phoenix Course which works with young people who are on the cusp of offending.
The part of my job that I enjoy most, beside working with a great team, is meeting the young people we work with and seeing their attitude, behaviour and confidence change as the week goes by.
It is incredibly rewarding to work with young people to overcome any issues that they may have, be that a lack of confidence & low self-esteem, difficulty to perform academically, problems with communicating or difficult to engage with, in need of vocational direction, at risk of getting into trouble or vulnerable to peer pressure.
