Newtown Fire Station
Situated on the banks of the River Severn in one of the most visually arresting areas in Wales, Newtown's small town charm is supported by a thriving business community. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy excellent shopping, first class theatres, museums and art galleries.
With a total population of 19074, Newtown is the largest settlement in Powys and has a range of community services and facilities that should be associated with such a settlement.
There are busy trunk road systems branching out in all directions; a large proportion of the vehicles travelling through the area are transient, resulting in a proportionally higher rate of Road Traffic Collisions compared to similar wards in the County.
The River Severn runs through the town and at certain times of the year a great deal of flooding occurs, both in the town centre and lower down stream towards Welshpool.
Priority for 2014-2015
• Reduction in Road Traffic Collisions
• Reduction in Dwelling fires
Road traffic collision statistics have remained unacceptably high in the Newtown area. We will continue our partnership work with Powys Road safety, Dyfed Powys Police, Go Safe and the Motor cycle action group, targeting vulnerable road users (16 - 24 year olds, motorcyclists and those aged over 70) in line with Welsh Government road safety delivery plans.
Dwelling fires in the Newtown area have seen a 300% (7-20) increase during 2013. Efforts will be made to build stronger relationships with Local authority housing managers, housing associations and third sector partners to identify and provide safety advice to vulnerable tenants.
