CHIEF FIRE OFFICER

The Person:

As Chief Fire Officer of Mid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service you will direct the Executive Board, and head an organisation which has demonstrated consistently high levels of performance and innovation during a time of change and financial pressures.

Suitable applicants will have already demonstrated achievement and leadership and be able to show a clear understanding of the challenges facing the Service over the coming 5 years and beyond.

You will have the skills and aptitudes to operate effectively at a strategic level, and be able to provide examples of where your professional involvement has made a positive difference.

At a time of tight financial constraints you will need to think creatively and channel the energy and commitment of colleagues to inspire positive performance to seek continual improvement.

Applicants will currently operate at Brigade Manager level, and those able to display strong evidence of good communication and leadership skills will be advantaged, as will those who can demonstrate ongoing personal and professional development, evidenced by post-graduate qualification(s).

The Mid and West Wales area covers the largest geographical area of any Fire & Rescue Service in England and Wales and has an extensive coastline.  It has a diverse range of risks, including the urbanised City and County of Swansea, petrochemical and shipping industries around Milford Haven, Baglan and Port Talbot, Universities at Aberystwyth, Carmarthen and Swansea, as well as a large rural agricultural and forestry base.

The successful applicant will be based at Fire Service Headquarters in Carmarthen, which administers 58 fire stations and 1300 staff with a budget of over £40 million.

The Service has recently been re-accredited with Investors in People (Silver) and the Welsh Government’s Corporate Health Standard (Gold).

​Wholetime Firefighter Vacancies

The Service works in collaboration with the North Wales Fire & Rescue Service and South Wales Fire & Rescue Service in terms of an All - Wales Recruitment Campaign​ when ​Wholetime Firefighter vacancies arise.
 

These recruitment campaigns usually take place every 2-3 years and advertising and publicity campaigns take place in the lead up to the recruitment of Firefighters.

EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN

A two year fixed-term contract will shortly exist in the role of Equipment Technician, based within the Earlswood and Swansea Bay area. The post is 37 hours per week (Monday-Friday).

 This role will involve carrying out routine maintenance, on all firefighting equipment maintained by the Transport Department.

 CLERICAL ASSISTANT

A one year fixed-term contract currently exists in the role of Clerical Assistant within the Technical Services Department based at Service Headquarters, Carmarthen.  The post is 37 hours per week (Monday-Friday).

The successful applicant will be responsible for undertaking clerical work including word processing, together with a range of other general clerical and administrative tasks.

   PROJECT ADMINISTRATOR (2 YEAR FIXED-TERM CONTRACT)

       £17,333 - £19,317 per annum

We are looking for an experienced Administrator to support the Joint Control Room Project.

The Joint Emergency Control Project forms part of a suite of projects in the National Issues Committee, Key Collaborative Area for National Control Arrangements.  The project aims to merge the Fire Control teams in Mid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) and South Wales Fire & Rescue Service (SWFRS) and relocate the newly formed Control team at South Wales Police (SWP) Headquarters in Bridgend.

The successful candidate will have excellent communication and computer skills, be well organised, have the ability to work to tight deadlines, to act on their own initiative and work closely with members of the Joint Control Room Project team.

This is an exciting and challenging role and your main responsibilities will be to support the Project Coordinator and ICT Project Officer in a variety of tasks including but not limited to

  • Attending project meetings and taking minutes
  • Preparing reports
  • Updating project management documents and files
  • Monitoring project budgets
  • Diary and travel arrangements
  • Collating project timesheets
The successful candidate will work a total of 37 hours per week, which due to the nature of the project will need to be flexible. The role will work directly to the Project Coordinator and will be based primarily at Mid and West Wales headquarters in Carmarthen. Due to the nature of the project the successful candidate will be expected to travel to other locations.
