Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service to Bolster
Fire Prevention Efforts with FM Global Grant
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) have been successful in receiving a Fire Prevention grant from FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers.
FM Global representatives presented the cheque for $10,000 (which equates to over £7,000) to Diana Harris, Safeguarding and Firesetter Intervention Officer at MAWWFRS Headquarters in Carmarthen. This funding will be used to provide training for MAWWFRS staff who work with children, young people and adults who deliberately set fires. As a Fire and Rescue Service, our aim is to deliver educational materials to increase understanding of the consequences of arson. their actions. Our educational programmes explore impulsivity, problem solving and fire safety awareness; early intervention is key to fire prevention.
Because fire continues to be the leading cause of property damage worldwide, during the past 40 years FM Global has contributed millions of pounds in fire prevention grants to fire service organisations around the globe.
Michael Spaziani, Assistant Vice President for FM Global and Manager of the Fire Prevention Grant Program said:
“At FM Global, we strongly believe most of the property damage is preventable, not inevitable. Far too often, inadequate budgets prevent those organisations working to prevent fire from being as proactive as they would like to be. With additional financial support, grant recipients are actively helping to improve property risk in the communities they serve.”
The FM Global Grants are awarded to national and local organisations that can best demonstrate that the funding will have an evident impact on preventing fire or mitigating the damage it can cause.
Karen Jones, Head of Community Safety for MAWWFRS said:
“This grant from FM Global will enable Fire and Rescue Service across Wales to provide additional skills and knowledge for staff who engage with children and adults who are at risk from being involved in firesetting. This work is intended to support the individuals and their families to prevent deliberate acts of firesetting and deter those who have a curiosity with fire. Prevention is always better than response and the generous support of FM Global will enable us to educate our communities to reduce the risk of fire in the home and in our countryside. This is an investment in community safety and is much appreciated by the Welsh Fire and Rescue Services.”
On Thursday 30th May 2019, Hap Wharton, FM Global Senior Consultant Engineer presented a Fire Prevention Grant Award plaque to Karen Jones, Head of Community Safety and Diana Harris.
