Paul Bates
Deputy Chief Fire Officer
As well as deputising for the Chief Fire Officer, Paul is the Director of Development responsible for the Strategic Planning and Performance, People and Organisational Development, Human Resources, Corporate Communications and Welsh Language.
He is the Chief Fire Officers Association (Wales) lead for Risk Management and the chair of the Fire Fighters Charity for Mid and West Wales; work in which he has been involved since 1989.
Paul started his career in Lincolnshire Fire Brigade as a retained firefighter in 1983 serving at Market Rasen. He joined the wholetime service in April 1985 serving at Gainsborough, Boston and Spalding fire stations. He transferred to Powys Fire Brigade in 1992 following promotion to Station Officer at Brecon.
Following reorganisation in 1996 which saw the combining of Powys, Dyfed County and West Glamorgan Fire Brigades, Paul was appointed to the role of Assistant Divisional Officer within the Performance Review Department of the newly formed Mid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service, subsequently being promoted to Divisional Officer during December 1997 within the same department. In March 2000, a move to the role of Technical Support Officer saw further promotion to Divisional Officer grade II. In 2004, he undertook a successful period of secondment with the Government's Risk Management Fire Advisory Team, following which he was promoted to Area Manager within Mid and West Wales Fire & Rescue Service as Head of Operational Risk Management.
Paul was appointed as Assistant Chief Fire Officer in 2009, responsible for organisational risk, before being promoted to Deputy Chief Fire Officer in 2011.
Paul is an active member of the Chief Fire Officers Association, a member of the Institution of Fire Engineers and holds an Executive Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Wales.
Paul is married with one teenage daughter and lives in Pembrey.
