Advice for Events - Barbecues
To make sure that your barbecue is a safe and enjoyable experience for all your family, follow these simple tips:

  • Barbecue should be sited on level ground, away from houses, sheds, fences, and overhanging trees and shrubs, where people do not have to squeeze past it.

  • Fill to a depth of approximately 5cm (2 inches). Restore charcoal away from fire.

  • Use firelighters or the least amount of starter fuel. NEVER PETROL.

  • Wear suitable clothing when cooking.

  • Never leave the barbecue unattended, keeping children and garden games away when cooking.

  • When cooking fatty foods, fat dripping on to hot coals may cause fire to flare up.

  • After use store barbecue away cooled. Dispose of ashes over bare garden soil – never put in the dustbin.

  • Change cylinders of gas barbecues in open air, ensuring that controls and cylinder valve are in the off position.

  • If a gas leak is suspected check connections and pipes for leaks by brushing with soapy water and looking for bubbles. Tighten but do not over tighten joints. If unsure do not use and seek specialist advice.

  • After cooking turn off the cylinder first prior to barbecue controls, to use up surplus gas in the pipes.

  • Cylinders should be stored outside away from frost and direct sunlight. Do not keep more spare cylinders than you need.
