Fire Safety Education Schemes - Fire Awareness Child Education (FACE)
Fire Awareness Child Education

The FACE, or Fire Awareness Child Education is a specialist scheme aimed at targeting younger fire setters i.e. 5-12 years. In the majority of cases these young children are experimenting with fire and this can be easily rectified with a simple visit to the child to explain the dangers and consequences involved with fire play.

Referrals to the programme can be made via a number of channels such as through the fire crew attending an incident, parents/guardians phoning the fire and rescue service directly, social services department or the police.

The programme follows a simple course of events, which are put into action within a few days of receiving the referral. Fire and Rescue Service personnel who have had the appropriate training will visit the child and a parent/guardian in their home environment. The aim is to educate everyone involved (not just the child) about the dangers of fire and to prevent repeated fire setting. Parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss the original incident and subsequent Fire Brigade visit with the child afterwards. The child is also left with a project book to complete, with parent/guardian interaction encouraged wherever possible. It is usual practice for the FACE volunteer to check on the child's progress via the telephone following the visit.

This programme has been adopted by many Fire and Rescue Services and is extremely successful. For those participants who have received a FACE visit, the repeat fire setting rate is on average less than 20%.

For further information on the FACE scheme please contact the FACE co-ordinator at the Community Fire Safety department, Morriston Community Safety HQ.
