Outreach Activities
During recent years, the Fire & Rescue Service has started to examine the increasing problem of arson and fire related crime. Research has subsequently shown that it is young people who are unfortunately, often the cause of such problems. However, building effective relationships between the Fire & Rescue Service and young people is proving to be highly beneficial, both for the youngsters involved and also the Fire and Rescue Service by highlighting the dangers to life and property fire related crime can bring.

The Youth Inclusion Programme "Phoenix" is therefore a five-day intensive practical course for 13 to 17 year olds, that is specifically intended to help young people understand all of the risks associated with fire. It is a physically and mentally demanding course and is geared to working together in crews of teams. Its aim is to develop the potential of youngsters, boost self-confidence and promote leadership skills through Fire and Rescue Service based activities.

It is anticipated that, with displayed commitment and the completion of many aspects of the programme, young people will enhance their future employment prospects and social skills.
