Risk Reduction Planning

In April 2007 the Authority started to implement its 2007/10 Risk Reduction Plan. This high level document set out key objectives to improve our services and assist in making Mid and West Wales safer. All of the objectives contained within the 2007-2010 Risk Reduction Plan have already undergone a major process of public consultation which was carried out in 2006-2007 before we finalised the plan.

The Authority produced a draft Risk Reduction Action Plan for 09/10 and two proposals were consulted upon between 6th May 2008 and 29th July 2008

1. Dedicated crews for special appliances - The Swansea area is being provided with new special appliances which will require a review of crewing options for these and other appliances.

2. Day crewed stations - These stations have full time fire fighters on duty during day time hours. The hours of duty need to match the times of greatest risk. The activity at day crewed stations has been analysed to bring about the best deployment of staff who work at these stations.

The Authority has considered all the comments received on the proposals and a report detailing the outcomes of the consultation is now available for viewing.

At its meeting held on 27th October 2008 the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Authority approved its Final Risk Reduction Action Plan 2009/10. The plan reports on the Authority’s final recommendations on the two areas consulted upon. Information is also provided in the plan on the Authority’s achievements and on the continued shift of emphasis towards preventing fires and other emergencies whilst maintaining fast, efficient and effective response arrangements.

The Fire Authority are now in the process of producing the Service’s first five year plan that not only reports on our Risk Reduction objectives, but will also act as a Corporate Plan. The plan is designed to strengthen planning and delivery of long term strategies and will cover the period 2010 – 2015.

The Authority’s priorities for the next five years will be detailed within the plan and Annual Action Plans will be provided throughout the life of the document in order to report progress on focus areas for the coming year.

Consultation for the Draft Plan for 2010 - 2015 will run from 12th May 2009 to 4th August 2009 and will allow for staff and communities to provide their views on the proposals contained in the plan.
