REPORT TO RESOURCES COMMITTEE

DATE: 16th January 2006

Review of local service delivery – opportunity to contribute

Summary

Members will be aware that in July 2005 the First Minister announced that Sir Jeremy Beecham, Vice-Chair of the Local Government Association would lead a review of local service provision. In December, the Chairs and Chief Fire Officers of the Fire and Rescue Services in Wales gave oral evidence to Sir Jeremy. The Authority has also been invited to provide written evidence to the review and attached is a draft response (PDF, 42.8kb) for Members’ consideration.

Implications

The review is part of the “Delivering the Connections” agenda, and is intended to “identify improvements in the arrangements for local service delivery which are as radical and innovative as necessary.” The review is not only focussing on local authorities but on services provided by other organisations including fire and rescue, police, health and other services. There are therefore potentially far reaching implications for the Authority in each of the following areas and the window of opportunity for achieving the vision as set out in “Delivering the Connections” is time limited.
