All Wales Fire and Rescue Service's Aims to Keep Your Home Safe

All Wales Fire and Rescue Service's launch an SMS Texting Service to encourage more people to take advantage of their FREE Home Fire Safety Check (HFSC).

Over past years the public have been able to apply for a Free HFSC by calling the FREE phone number or by registering on the service´s website. However as part of the Fire and Rescue service´s vision to continue to build safer communities we have now launched an SMS texting service which will hopefully encourage more people to apply for the Home Fire Safety Check.

This texting service is also available for the deaf and hard of hearing who traditionally may have had difficulty in communicating with us. For anyone wanting to apply for a Free HFSC, all they need to do is quite simply text the word ´HFSC´ followed by their name to 88365. If the person is deaf or speech impaired then they need only add the word ´deaf´ after their name before sending the text to the same number (88365). A member of the fire service will then contact them within 3 working days.

Since 2004 all three services have visited over 200,000 homes in Wales giving advice on fire safety and fitting free smoke alarms. During this same period, All Wales Fire and Rescue Services have seen a reduction in accidental dwelling fires and a reduction in the number of people killed or injured through fire in the home. However there are still many properties at risk, who have not yet received a free HFSC.

Head of Community Risk Reduction, Chris Davies said:

"We want to continue the good work which is already being done by all three Welsh Fire Services; therefore it is now important that we target the homes that have not yet received a Free HFSC, so that we can continue to reduce the risk of fire injuries and deaths within the home. Not only do we fit the properties with free working smoke alarms we also give advice that is aimed to highlight possible danger areas within the home and to assist people to create a fire safe environment. The Welsh Assembly Government have consistently supported all our fire safety activities and this latest initiative has also been made possible by financial assistance from them "
