Carmarthenshire County Command
Headquarters
Introduction from the Head of Carmarthenshire Command, Rob Quin

Carmarthenshire often referred to as the 'Garden of Wales' is the fifth largest unitary authority in Wales and administers an area of 239,800 hectares with a population of 173600.

The County of Carmarthenshire is divided into the industrial towns of Llanelli and Ammanford with Carmarthen as the administrative centre. The remainder is made up of small towns and rural areas. With excellent road networks, Carmarthenshire County Council has successfully developed many areas to encourage growth of both business and leisure.

Resources

The Command has approximately 240 members of staff based at eleven fire stations and the Command Headquarters.

Carmarthenshire County Command Headquarters is based in Johnstown, Carmarthen. A team of 6 members provides administrative support to the Command's Fire Stations; this includes Fire Safety, Community Fire Safety and Operations.

Wholetime stations are located at Llanelli, which is 24 hour crewed, Carmarthen and Ammanford are provided with day crewing with all three stations having retained complement.

Retained Stations are located at Kidwelly, Pontyates, Tumble, Newcastle Emlyn, Llandysul, Llandeilo, Llandovery and Whitland.

These stations utilise a total of fourteen pumping appliances, five special appliances as well as a number of other support vehicles including boats and off-road vehicles.

Fire Safety

Legislative Fire Safety is serviced from Offices based at both Llanelli and Carmarthen, providing a comprehensive service to all areas within the county.

Community Fire Safety within Carmarthenshire

In line with Brigade policy and commitment in reducing deaths and injuries through fire, particularly to the elderly and the young, Carmarthenshire has two full-time Community Fire Safety Advisors, based at Carmarthenshire Command Headquarters. The team work alongside operational crews on stations delivering advice and information to reduce the risk of fire in the home. This advice can be delivered in several forms e.g. fire safety education to schools and colleges, attend local fetes and carnivals, local meetings within the community, door to door campaigning, provide and fit smoke detectors and the introduction of Home Fire Safety Audits.

Partnerships

In partnership with the Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust a Co-Responder scheme has been set up at Llandysul Fire Station, the first in the County. A vehicle, which was acquired by Llys y Fran surgery and provided with a defibrillator and other first aid medical equipment, is crewed by firefighters at Llandysul, twenty four hours a day.

As part of the Community Safety Partnership we have been involved with other key players in producing local plans to make our communities a safer place to live. Closer working with the Police, Local Authority departments and Youth Opportunities Team has resulted in a reduction in calls to abandoned vehicles and other initiatives are now being prepared to tackle deliberate fires in the county.

The Command's core objective is to provide a comprehensive, high quality fire and rescue service to the communities within Carmarthenshire, with an emphasis on proactive work within the communities to reduce the risks associated with fire.
