Operational Risks

Ceredigion is a predominantly rural County with a population of 71,800 of which 10,000 are a migrating student population. Although the total population is swelled in the summer months due to the many holiday destinations. The County covers an area of 179,500 hectares (1795 km2). The vast majority of the County's population is located along the coastal belt with the County becomes progressively more sparsely populated further east. The Command has three centres of population at Aberystwyth, Cardigan, and Lampeter. The major risks include the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth (the original library was constructed in 1937 but has been extended several times in recent years), Bronglais Hospital, Alexandra Hall, the many University Buildings in both Aberystwyth and Lampeter, numerous hotels and aged persons homes and a former military base in Aberporth.

Community Safety

The Command has completed in excess of 1500 Home Fire Safety Checks throughout the County this year. Our proactive community safety work includes reducing the incidence of arson, fires, unwanted fire signals and Road Traffic Collisions. The Command delivers an RTC Reduction Course. This Free of Charge practical and theoretical course runs for three hours on one evening per month at fire stations throughout the County. If you would like to book your place on the next course, please contact our Community Safety Team on 0370 6060699 extn. 8812.

Part of our work includes the provision of Media Releases for the Cambrian News and other local papers and bilingual Community Fire Safety messages on Radio Ceredigion. Our Community Safety Team visit schools throughout the County and are available for Community Safety advice.

Collaborative Initiatives

The Command works in partnership with Ceredigion Care and Repair, Ceredigion Contact and Ceredigion Council in order to better target at risk groups where we complete our ‘FREE OF CHARGE’ Home Fire Safety Checks. Ceredigion Command have delivered in excess of 4,000 FREE OF CHARGE home visits, since the work began in 2005 and the annual target for Aberystwyth Fire Station Crew is the highest for any station in Mid and West Wales.

Aberaeron, Cardigan, Lampeter and Tregaron Fire Stations all participate in the Co-Responder partnership with the Ambulance Trust, whereby each team assists the Trust by providing emergency medical care in isolated locations. We are currently working in partnership with Dyfed Powys Police to drive down the incidence of Road Traffic Collisions in the County. We are continuously looking for funding opportunities to carry out Home Fire Safety Checks, drive down the incidence of arson and develop our Community Risk Reduction Team based at Command Headquarters in Aberystwyth.

Other collaborative initiatives in various stages of development, include links with the Youth Offending Team - Young Firefighters, (Phoenix Course), The Princes Trust (Team Programme), Duke of Edinburgh Award (sixth form students), Welsh Baccalaureate (Penglais School), the Aberystwyth University, Ceredigion County Council, RNLI, St John's Ambulance, British Heart Foundation and the Forestry Commission (Nant Arian Project).
