Neath & Port Talbot County Command
Headquarters
Introduction from the County Commander Ken Wall

Neath Port Talbot is one of the six unitary authority areas encompassed by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The Neath Port Talbot Command serves the County area comprising 442 km² and a population of approximately 137,000.

The County contains a wide and varied range of risks, including sites such as CORUS, BOC, INCO, the UK’s largest Biomass Plant and the 320,00 m² Intertissue Paper Mill. Alongside this the County also has the Deep water harbour, the M4 Motorway, dual carriageways, high speed rail links, extensive forested areas and numerous Coastal and Inland Waterways, making the Command an interesting and challenging place to work. The personnel of Neath Port Talbot Command strive to ensure that through our proactive working and collaboration with partners, that the safety of our communities is paramount.

Resources

There are currently 6 Fire Stations within the Command. These are located at Neath, Glynneath, Cymmer, Port Talbot, Seven Sisters and Pontardawe. This provision is soon to be enhanced with a further Fire Station to be located at Amman Valley, providing, in total, eight fire appliances crewed by 144 firefighters serving to protect our communities.

A specialist team of 10 Community Risk Reduction Officers and 2 Community Safety Assistants serve to further enhance the safety and protection of our communities. The administrative headquarters for the Command is located on the first floor at Neath Fire Station.

Safer Neath Port Talbot

We are committed to working proactively in partnership with a wide group of agencies and organisations to meet the Fire and Rescue Service’s aims of reducing the incidence and impacts of fire and road traffic collisions. Schemes such as ‘Phoenix’, which is designed to reduce fire risk and fire crime through education, and ‘Crash Scene Incident’, which focuses on the issues of speeding, drink-driving and using mobile phones whilst driving, are typical examples of regular community based initiatives aimed at prevention rather than intervention. A dedicated Schools Liaison Officer ensures that all schools across Neath Port Talbot are visited and provided with fire safety education programmes aimed at all pupils within Key Stages 1 to 4. Integral to the preventative work within our communities are Home Fire Safety Checks, whereby operational personnel and community safety personnel visit homes and provide vital fire safety advice and install smoke detectors where required. Partnership work, with agencies such as ‘Help the Aged’ and Local Authority Social Services, is key to ensuring the Home Fire Safety Check service is targeted to those identified as vulnerable.

Other schemes in which Command personnel play an active part include ‘Pass Plus’ which provides new drivers aged 17 to 25 with specific driver hazard-awareness training; working with, and supporting the Neath Port Talbot Youth Offending Team; and, Young Firefighter schemes, where Fire Service training involving operational drills, first aid, fire safety education and leadership is given to young people between the ages of 13 and 17 years.

Command Objectives

The main objectives of the Command are to provide a service that works proactively to prevent fires, road traffic collisions and other emergencies so that our communities are as safe as is practicably possible, and to ensure that those who live in, work in, or visit Neath Port Talbot are provided with a Fire and Rescue Service that meets their expectations. e.
