Cymmer Fire Station
Cymmer Fire Station Overview
Crewing Arrangements
Cymmer Fire Station is staffed by ten Firefighters under the command of a Watch Manager and two Crew Managers on a part time staffing system known as a Retained Duty System. The station is run on a personal pager system which means that personnel are available as and when required by the community 24hrs a day. The station also has the support of a full time Station Manager who oversees the day to day arrangements with further support from Neath Port Talbot Command Headquarters based in Cimla.
The station also supports the Ambulance Service by providing accommodation and welfare facilities for the paramedics.
Station Capabilities
Cymmer Fire Station has one Rescue Pump fitted with equipment capable of dealing with nearly all types of emergency such as, Road Traffic Collisions, House fires, animal rescues, forestry fires, chemical incidents and some water rescues.
Also available is an “off-road” transit 4x4 pump; this provides transport for personnel, water and equipment to forestry areas difficult to reach in and around the Afan Valley.
Location
The Fire Station is located off Station Road and can be accessed via Maesteg Road/Avon Street Bridge. The station is located strategically to serve the communities of Afan Valley and is also available as support in Port Talbot, Neath and Maesteg.
Station Risks
Cymmer is in a rural location surrounded by mountains and forestry with the A4107 dissecting the valley. The main risk is that of the residential areas due to occupancy profile and their location in close proximity to potential forestry fires.
The main roads can be a risk in certain weather conditions and care must be taken when travelling these routes. Within the area are schools, residential homes and large ponds in Glyncorrwg.
There are also industrial risks within the area which have been placed on Mid and West Wales “Risk Register”.
Fire Awareness and Prevention Work
Cymmer currently runs a Young Fire Fighter scheme on a Thursday evening that primarily targets youth involvement by utilising the facilities and expertise of the Fire and Rescue Service to;
• Develop young people mentally and physically;
• Prepare young people for roles and responsibilities;
• Promote continual development and leadership skills;
• Increase awareness of Community Fire safety;
• Increase fire and safety awareness.
Personnel are also actively involved in community work by carrying out home fire safety checks, chip pan demonstrations and school liaison.
