The Big Challenge is Complete!

On 5th June 2023, 12 members of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) set out on an epic cycling challenge, that would put their physical and mental strength to the ultimate test!

The team cycled just short of 1000 miles over 10 days throughout the UK on the iconic journey of Lands’ End in Cornwall, the most South-Westerly point of Britain to John O’Groats in Northern Scotland. Cycling on average 100 miles a day, passing through three countries and climbed an impressive 59 thousand feet!

Throughout the entire challenge the team were faced with very hot weather conditions, the relentless summer sun meant a few extra stops along the way to keep well hydrated and boost their energy levels.

They met lots of new faces over the 10 days, all of which supported their endeavour, offering words of encouragement for the remainder of their journey. A newly married couple in Gretna Green cheered them on as they passed, and they even bumped into a celebrity – Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington OBE.

Their goal was to raise £10,000 that would be shared between three charities close to their hearts. Not only did they achieve what they set out to do but they smashed the target and to date have raised a whopping £14,701! All in aid of:

Corporate Head of Organisational Risk, Justin Lewis said:

“We all shared a range of emotions throughout our Big Challenge journey, happy that we’d achieved what had been one of the most physically and mentally demanding challenges that we had ever done but in equal measure one of the best life experiences as well. There was nothing glamourous about the challenge, it was hard, hot, hilly, and tiring! Covering close to 1000 miles and over 59000 feet of climbing, that’s like cycling over Everest TWICE, but then if it was easy everyone would do it. We would like to thank everyone who has donated so far and if you haven’t, we would urge you to, to support these 3 fantastic charities”
Each member of the team was fuelled by the support and generosity they received from the kind donations and well wishes from their colleagues, members of the public, friends, and family. Along with their own personal motivation, strength, and determination they saw The Big Challenge through to the finish line in an unforgettable emotional journey.

There is still chance to donate at Fundraiser - Yr Her Fawr, LEJOG 2023 ( and you can also look back at their journey and congratulate them, on their Facebook page Yr Her Fawr / The Big Challenge | Facebook
