International Women's Day 2023 at the National Botanic Garden

In support of International Women’s Day 2023 the Service held an event at the National Botanic Garden, to celebrate the journeys and achievements of inspiring women, both within our fire family and locally. The event ran throughout the entire day, with four female speakers, group workshops and peer networking.

The first guest speaker was Annmarie Brown - Mentoring Project Officer for The Women’s Equality Network (WENWales). Annmarie shared experiences of her career path, from relocating to Wales from England, becoming a first-time mum and much more. Annmarie has experience working with a range of diverse individuals and is a passionate advocate for equality and social justice.

The next speaker was Teri-Ann Parry Head of Northern Division, her presentation was about women doing the right thing, even when no one is looking! Teri-Ann shared how she drew inspiration from others throughout her life, what motivated her and who her inspirational role models are.

Watch Manager Jess Smith followed on from Teri-Ann, with a presentation on backing yourself. Jess, who is currently on maternity leave after having her first baby, shared how having confidence in yourself, your abilities and backing yourself can have a positive impact. Jess left a memorable message from her presentation, “if not you, then who?”

Our final speaker was Helen Rees, Head of Procurement for the Service. Helen shared her emotional journey of what lead her to be the person she is today, starting with her life before mid and west Wales Fire and rescue Service, right up until the position she holds today.

All the speaker journeys were truly inspirational and left a lot of food for thought, throughout the entire group. As a service we will continue to challenge gender stereotypes, call out discrimination, draw attention to bias, and seek out inclusion to #EmbraceEquity and are already looking forward to International Women’s Day 2024!
