Sprinkler Week 2023

This week Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are supporting the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) Sprinkler Week campaign which runs from 15th – 21st May 2023.

Fire sprinklers are widely recognised as the single most effective method for fighting the spread of fires in their early stages. The NFCC and the National Fire Sprinkler network (NFSN) carried out research to investigate the effectiveness and reliability of sprinkler systems. They found out that sprinklers systems:

  • Operate on 94% of occasions demonstrating very high reliability.
  • When they do operate, they extinguish or contain the fire on 99% of occasions.
  • In both converted and purpose-built flats, sprinklers are 100% effective in controlling fires.

Fire sprinklers save lives and reduce injuries, protect firefighters who attend incidents and reduce the amount of damage to both property and the environment from fire.

Head of Fire Safety Sion Slaymaker said:

“Since the introduction of sprinklers, the risks to people and property have been significantly reduced. This was recently evidenced in a fire that Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue attended in Pembrokeshire earlier this year.  The systems are designed to suppress or extinguish fires in the early stages of fire development which improves occupant safety, allowing additional time for fire crews to assess the incidents they attend and reduce the risk they are exposed to when undertaking subsequent firefighting actions.”

Here are some key messages on the benefits of sprinklers:

  • Save lives and reduce injury
  • Protect property
  • Reduce the impact of fire on the environment
  • Reduce interruption to UK businesses
  • Assist search and rescue operations
  • Reduce the risk to firefighters
  • Increase community resilience
  • Preserve heritage
