In recent years, several projects have been completed at Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) sites to develop green spaces to encourage biodiversity, to improve sustainability and to enhance staff wellbeing.
The projects at Fire Stations and other Service sites have been initiated and developed by crews, alongside the Service’s Sustainability Manager. Projects range from wildlife gardens, areas to grow fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as green infrastructure developments. As well as enhancing previously underutilised areas, the new green area projects have created spaces to foster community engagement and for Service personnel to use to improve their wellbeing. These projects have been achievable through funding provided by Local Places for Nature and Keep Wales Tidy.
Work will soon begin on larger-scale green infrastructure projects at two Fire Stations within the Service’s Southern Division (Swansea and Neath Port Talbot). With funding and support from Neath Port Talbot Council and Welsh Government, projects will include a new green roofed summer house, green roofed bin shelters and bike sheds, as well as new areas for tree planting.
These projects mark a significant milestone in fulfilling the Service’s obligation under the Section 6 Duty of the Environment (Wales) Act 2016 and in its commitment to reducing its environmental impact. Read more on the Service’s environmental and sustainability objectives here.
