Background
With the dissolution of the three former fire brigades of Dyfed, Powys and West Glamorgan on March 31st, 1996, the newly-formed Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service had the opportunity to design a new Coat of Arms.
Fire Authority and Service members were unified in the decision to ensure that the new Coat of Arms reflected the main characteristics of the area and the new design was accepted.
Design
The centre design comprises of three mascles or voided lozenges dividing the whole horizontally and counter changing the same in green and white. The three voided lozenges can be taken as representing the three component parts of the Fire and Rescue Service. They also suggest the mountains and hills of Mid and West Wales, which are counter changed and reflected in water which is the area’s lakes, rivers and coastline. There is also a suggestion of a ‘M’ with ‘W’ in the base, for ‘Mid’ and ‘West’.
The apexes and bases of the mascles are treated as a stylised spruce tree. Within each mascle is a cog wheel, as symbols of the industrial areas of the Fire and Rescue Service (Swansea, Port Talbot, Llanelli and Milford Haven).
The design retains simplicity and distinctiveness, while also reflecting the rugged coast, the countryside, forestry and industry of our Service area.
