On Saturday, 28th March, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) crew members took part in a 4-pump training exercise named ‘Exercise Frostline’, held at the TATA Steel in Port Talbot.

The exercise, consisting of crew members from Port Talbot, Neath and Morriston Fire Stations was designed to test the crew’s operational response to a simulated gas leaks in the Hot Mills area of the basement, with live casualties in a realistic environment.

TATA Steel proved to be an ideal location for the exercise, allowing crews to familiarise themselves with the layout, and gain a clearer understanding of the hazards present. Six crew members wearing Breathing Apparatus (BA) successfully entered the basement area and rescued three missing casualties.

The exercise also provided TATA Steel with an opportunity to test their current evacuation protocols for their large and complex furnace areas.

Watch Manager Chris Doyle said:

“The exercise at ‘TATA Steel’ provided a perfect opportunity for our crews to practice and perform operational responses to a simulated gas leak incident. All attendees worked tirelessly to test our procedures in a realistic environment, this providing a platform for excellent learning opportunities for the crews. Well done to all involved”

The exercise was a huge success with crews gaining valuable knowledge in a realistic setting.

Thank you to the everyone involved for their hard work and dedication during this exercise.
