At 7.13pm on Sunday, May 6th, the Swansea West, Swansea Central, Morriston (one appliance and turntable ladder), Port Talbot (two appliances and water carrier), Gorseinon, Neath, Pontardawe, Pontarddulais and Carmarthen crews were called to an incident on New Cut Road, Swansea city centre.

Crews responded to a confirmed fire located on a ground floor hallway of a student accommodation block.  Initial crews were faced with an extremely complicated scene as over 100 people had evacuated the complex and it was confirmed there was a fire in at least one of the student flats.  The incident was effectively managed and information was quickly received on where people were in need of rescue from the rear of the site.

In total, three persons were rescued via ground floor windows by crew members, with four people rescued prior to the arrival of the Fire and Rescue Service.  Some individuals were suffering with smoke inhalation and minor injuries and made their way to hospital.

Crews utilised six breathing apparatus sets, three hose reel jets, two safety jets and thermal imaging cameras to extinguish the fire.

This incident required a multi-agency response with South Wales Police and the Welsh Ambulance Services Trust also in attendance, as well as the Fire and Rescue Service’s Incident Command Unit.

Crews left the scene at 9.02pm.
