The UK’s International Search and Rescue Team (UK-ISAR) recently hosted an International Timber Shoring Course in Merseyside.

Held at Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service’s Training and Development Academy, the course brought together Firefighters from countries across the world, including Ukraine, Netherlands, Taiwan and Lithuania, for an intensive and practical week of training.

The course was delivered in line with the methodology of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), ensuring that all instruction reflected internationally recognised standards for urban search and rescue operations.

Representing Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) was Firefighter and UK-ISAR Technician Charlie Seaman.  The course included sessions which focused on both standard and advanced shoring techniques used during international disaster response, with instructors applying the ‘Explain, Demonstrate, Imitate, Practice’ method to ensure clarity, confidence and hands‑on competence throughout.

The course demonstrated the value of joint training, professional exchange and commitment to continual improvement. By investing in shared standards and practical collaboration, the global search and rescue community continues to enhance its readiness to respond effectively wherever it is needed.

UK-ISAR are the official UK Government response to international disasters, funded and supported by FCDO (Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office).
