Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service is currently recruiting for On-Call Firefighters at ALL our On-Call Fire Stations.

Across Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, 75% of our Fire Stations are crewed entirely by On-Call Firefighters.  They protect our small towns and rural communities.

Like the Wholetime Duty System role, On-Call Firefighters respond to fires and special service incidents such as road traffic collisions, chemical emergencies, animal rescues, flooding and more.  They are also required to inform and educate their local communities and carry out Safe and Well visits in people’s homes.

On-Call Firefighters must live and work in their local communities and are from all walks of life.  They are able to give their time to assist the Fire and Rescue Service in return for a salary.  They do not crew the Fire Stations 24-hours-a-day, but get notified of an emergency call via a personal pager, which they carry with them when they are on duty.  Some of our On-Call Firefighters have other jobs with an agreement from their employers to leave to attend an emergency call if required.  Others are available outside typical working hours like evenings, weekends or between the school runs.

More Than Just Fires

A Firefighter’s role is not only to fight fires or to react to other emergencies. Firefighters also deliver important safety advice to schools and communities, which can include conducting Fire Safety Checks for homes and businesses.

Supporting the Ambulance Service

Some of our stations also offer Co-Responder support to the Ambulance Service.  In rural locations, Co-Responders can be first on the scene at a medical emergency.  This allows our trained firefighters to provide essential medical care on behalf of the Ambulance Service.
