On Monday, September 8th, the crew at Builth Wells Fire Station welcomed Darren Hughes, who was visiting to thank the crew for their fantastic response and work while he experienced a medical emergency.
While out running around 12 months ago, Darren suffered a cardiac arrest and required urgent medical attention. A fellow runner and friend of Darren’s, Lee Humphries, was the first at the scene and raised the alarm before performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) until help arrived. The incident required a multi-agency response, with Firefighters from Builth Wells Fire Station and personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Services Trust (WAST) and the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service in an Air Ambulance responding to the scene.
Darren and Lee, along with Darren’s wife Gaynor, were joined by Cerys Tucker who was the first paramedic at the scene, Laura Coyne, Community Fundraiser for the WAST and Tania Eveleigh from Air Ambulance UK while visiting the Fire Station. The visit gave Darren the opportunity to thank all the emergency services who helped him and highlighted the fantastic collaboration between all services to achieve a positive outcome.
