Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service ran a large‑scale training exercise at Leekes, Cross Hands on Tuesday 24 February 2026, designed to test the response to a multi‑vehicle road traffic collision involving multiple casualties.

The exercise, held in collaboration with local partners and supported by Dyfed Powys Police Cadets as role players, took place twice - once in the afternoon and again in the evening - giving crews the opportunity to train in both daylight and low‑light conditions.

Fire appliances and crews from stations across the Western Division, including Tumble, Pontyates, Llandeilo, Ammanford, Carmarthen and Llandovery attended, with additional support from Joint Fire Control, Training Delivery, and our Urban Search and Rescue Team. Community Safety Officers were also on hand, engaging with members of the public who gathered at the scene, sharing key road safety messages around the Fatal 5.

As part of the exercise, crews practised extrication techniques, casualty care, and command coordination, ensuring they remain fully prepared to respond to real emergencies across mid and west Wales.

Divisional Commander for Western Division, Nick Rees said:

“Exercises like this are vital for maintaining a safe, competent and effective workforce. They allow us to train in realistic conditions, strengthen joint working, and continue improving the service we provide to our communities.”

The Service would like to thank Leekes for the use of their car park, local residents, and all partner agencies involved for their support in making this training possible.
