Firefighter Clive Bywater of Rhayader Fire Station has recently celebrated 35 years of service with Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
Clive joined the then Powys Fire Brigade on December 4th, 1989, and has been a dedicated crew member ever since. Averaging 120 hours of cover per week, Clive has provided an estimated 218,000 hours of On-Call availability during his career.
Station Manager Martyn Field said:
“Clive takes great pride in all aspects of his role as an On-Call Firefighter. He ensures the appliances and station are always in great condition is very supportive of new starters by sharing his vast firefighting knowledge. His topography of the local area and further afield is an asset which is enhanced by his full-time job inspecting and maintaining hydrants across the Service area. On behalf of Rhayader Fire Station, I’d like to thank Clive for his unwavering dedication and service.”
On Thursday, December 5th, a long-service presentation was held to recognise Clive’s achievement. Joining Station Manager Field and the Rhayader crew to present Clive with his long-service certificate was Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Craig Flannery.

The role of an On-Call Firefighter provides many opportunities for personal and professional development, through training, teamwork, leadership and problem solving. On-Call Firefighters receive payment for their services, including retainer fees and call-out payments, supplementing their income from other employment.
