At 5.09pm on Saturday, March 21st, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Carmarthen, Amman Valley and Pontardawe Fire Stations were called to an incident near Gwrhyd Road in Pontardawe.
Crews responded to a pregnant mare, measuring approximately 14 hands, who had been trapped overnight up to top of her thigh in mud. The horse was located in a bog off a mountain road.
Crews were assisted by the horse’s owner, their associates and a local vet. Crews utilised dry suits, one marsh mat, one glide sheet, strops, shepherd’s crooks, general purpose lines, lighting and a tractor to successfully free the horse and place her on the glide sheet. The sheet was then attached to the tractor which pulled the horse several meters away from the hazardous bog area.
Crews left the scene at 7.22pm.
