On Tuesday, May 13th, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Morriston, Pontarddulais, Neath and Port Talbot Fire Stations took part in a training exercise at the Welsh Water Treatment Works in Swansea.
Named ‘Exercise Cloud’, the session simulated a Category 2 HAZMAT (hazardous materials) incident involving a leak of chlorine gas from a damaged valve on a storage tank. As part of the simulation, one Welsh Water Technician was reported missing, and a rescue plan was devised quickly.
Crew members donned protective splash suits and breathing apparatus sets to carry out a search and rescue operation of the site. A ground monitor was established to disperse the gas cloud. As well as exercising their search and rescue skills, the training session also provided the opportunity for crew members to follow decontamination procedures following a HAZMAT incident.
