Recently, several Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) crews took part in a water rescue training exercise in Builth Wells.

The session provided the opportunity for MAWWFRS Firefighters to simulate real-life emergency situations, focussing on swift water rescues where strong currents and unpredictable conditions can often pose a significant threat.  During the exercise, crews wore specialist water rescue equipment including dry suits, helmets and personal flotation devices, as they practiced locating and retrieving simulated casualties.

As well as personal protective equipment, crews also had the opportunity to utilise a variety of apparatus such as boats, rope systems, sleds and ladders to safely reach casualties and bring them from the water.  The session emphasised the importance of situational awareness, communication and adapting quickly to changing conditions, as well as tested individual skills and team coordination.

With an increase in the number of flooding and water rescue related incidents in recent years, it’s important that MAWWFRS regularly conducts training exercises such as this one so that crews are always prepared for water-related emergencies.
