At 4.42pm on Monday, December 16th, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Llanelli and Pontiets Fire Stations were called to an incident on Trimsaran Road in Llanelli.

Crews responded to a fire confined to the chimney of a two-storey domestic property.  Crews utilised one hose reel jet, one ladder, chimney rods and lighting to extinguish the fire.  After the fire was extinguished, Firefighters carried out a Home Fire Safety Inspection of the property and installed new smoke alarms.

Crews left the scene at 7.27pm and reattended the property at 9.30pm to reinspect the chimney flue with thermal imaging cameras, but no hot spots were found.

Chimney Fire Safety

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service has seen a recent increase in the number of chimney fires requiring the attendance of crews.

Most chimney fires are preventable. Regular inspection and cleaning of chimney flues will help prevent fires within chimneys.

Not only does regular sweeping and maintenance decrease the likelihood of a chimney fire, but it can also avoid a dangerous accumulation of carbon monoxide gas.  Carbon Monoxide is a highly poisonous gas that has no colour, taste or smell.  Fuel burning appliances such as stoves, fires, boilers and water heaters can produce carbon monoxide if they are incorrectly fitted, badly repaired or poorly maintained or if flues, chimneys or vents are blocked.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are maintained and working properly will save lives.
