A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) Firefighter has been crowned Senior Open Champion at the 2026 Welsh Time Trial Championship.
Siôn Jones, an On-Call Firefighter at Tumble Fire Station, secured the title while representing the Ride Revolution Coaching Team, completing the 10-mile course in an impressive 20 minutes and 12 seconds.
The championship was held on a 10-mile course near Llanvaches in Newport, where competitors faced fast, rolling terrain that tested their endurance, pacing and technical ability.
From Childhood Enthusiast to Competitive Cyclist
Cycling has been part of twenty-year-old Siôn's life since childhood. He entered his first competitions at just four years old, which was the beginning of a lifelong passion for the sport.
Seeing his local cycling club training proved to be a turning point and after a discussion with them, he joined the club a few weeks later. Inspired by the team environment and eager to improve, Siôn went on to pursue competitive cycling, beginning to race seriously at the age of 16.
Serving the Community Beyond the Finish Line
Siôn began serving his local community as an On-Call Firefighter at MAWWFRS's Tumble Fire Station in October 2025.
After his father saw a recruitment open day at the station being advertised on social media, Siôn attended, loved the experience and applied shortly afterwards. Since then, he has completed his initial training, gaining the core skills and knowledge required for the role, which he continues to develop through ongoing training and operational incidents.
Talking about why he decided to apply, Siôn said the role appealed to him because it would allow him to develop valuable skills, gain new experiences and serve his local community while still enjoying his sporting commitments. He’s now also considering a career as a Wholetime Firefighter in the future.
Speaking of his role as a Firefighter, Siôn said:
“I’m really enjoying the experience and learning new skills every day.
No two incidents are ever the same and the best parts about the role are the people I get to work with and being part of a close-knit team.
To anyone considering whether to apply, I would encourage them to absolutely go for it. You’ve got nothing to lose and will gain so much from it.”
Siôn's success on the bike reflects the dedication and determination he brings to his role at Tumble Fire Station, where he continues to develop his firefighting skills while competing at the highest level of Welsh cycling.
