Wildfire Incidents: Our Response

With a number of wildfires continuing across our Service area, we wanted to provide some information about how these incidents are managed and what residents may see as firefighting operations continue.

When a wildfire is described as "under control", this does not necessarily mean it has been fully extinguished. In wildfire operations, it means crews have established tactics and control measures to contain the fire, limit further spread and manage risks to communities, infrastructure and the environment.

Wildfires can remain active for extended periods and, even when an incident is stable, residents may occasionally notice flare-ups or increased smoke. This is often a normal part of the extinguishment process, as Firefighters locate, expose, cool and extinguish hotspots that can remain hidden beneath the surface. Such activity does not necessarily indicate any significant change in the incident.

Wildfires behave very differently to other types of fires and require specialist tactics. One of the most effective methods used by fire and rescue services across the UK and internationally is the use of natural and created fire breaks. By removing available fuel, fire breaks help slow or stop the spread of fire, allowing crews to protect communities, property, infrastructure and the wider environment.

These and other tactics are selected by trained wildfire specialists and incident commanders, based on local conditions and established operational guidance.

We appreciate that seeing smoke, flames or firefighting activity continuing for several days can be concerning, and we remain committed to providing regular updates as incidents progress.

Finally, we would like to thank everyone involved in responding to these incidents. Our Firefighters continue to work tirelessly in challenging conditions, supported by partner agencies, landowners, volunteers and local communities. The cooperation, patience and support shown by residents plays a vital role in helping manage these incidents safely and effectively.
