On Saturday, June 6th, Firefighters from across the UK gathered in Swansea to compete in the Welsh Firefighter Challenge, held at the Swansea Arena.
Hosted annually by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS), the Welsh Firefighter Challenge brings together Firefighters from across the United Kingdom and overseas to take on a series of demanding physical and mental tests - all completed in full fire kit.
The event is designed to showcase the exceptional skill, strength and resilience that Firefighters demonstrate every day. More than a competition, the Welsh Firefighter Challenge is a celebration of community. It’s an opportunity for Firefighters to support one another, highlight their professionalism and recognise their continued dedication to keeping people safe.
The challenge includes a total of eight trials, designed to test the fitness and determination of the most seasoned Firefighter. Participants must complete a 50-metre run, a 50-metre hose carry, road traffic collision tool carry, a dummy drag and more.
MAWWFRS’s Chief Fire Officer, Craig Flannery, officially opened the event, before joining participants on the course in both individual and relay races.
The event featured a Safety Village, organised by MAWWFRS’s Community Safety Team and included a variety of partner agencies, including the Welsh Ambulance Service, the British Red Cross, Mountain Rescue, the RNLI and more.
Supporting the event were the Fire Cadets from Seven Sisters Fire Station, who worked tirelessly to reset the course between each race throughout the day. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the Cadets demonstrated great enthusiasm, dedication and teamwork.
